Jack was discharged from M.D. Anderson Saturday and we took the day and overnight to rest before heading back to Dallas yesterday. Jack’s understandably exhausted and under Dr. Lewis’ strict orders to take it very easy until further notice. He’s getting very good at following instructions.
Surgery went as well as we all could have hoped, and he was even released a little ahead of schedule. YAY! Negative margins with totally necrotic tumor tissue (meaning chemo did its job!) is exactly what we were all hoping for and Dr. Lewis prevailed.
Mobility wise, he’s on track. He progressed from walking a few feet with a walker on Tuesday, the day after surgery, to double lapping the nurses’ station on crutches by Friday. Ensuring he heals properly is focus numero uno so he can return to chemo with as short a break in treatment as possible. Very little physical therapy is on order for a while, outside of basic leg extensions while sitting and ankle rolling.
Lots of naps, lounging, pain management and protein consumption in his future until we head back to Houston for a check-up later this month. The napping part has come a bit easier than the rest of the above, but we know each day will get a little better.
Our brief stay in an “adult” hospital was no less attentive than what we’ve experienced at Children’s in Dallas—minus the charming window art, of course. Extraordinary doctors, PA’s, nurses, physical therapists, techs and more specialized medical professionals than we could count ensured his stay in P907 was as boring as possible. Remember, we really appreciate boring hospital stays.
Many, many thanks to our special Houston friends who made our time there as comfortable as possible with special deliveries and outings for me and Will. And enormous gratitude for all of the prayers and good wishes we received on April 8th. The Total Eclipse was really not a thing in Houston, but it was a BIG DEAL DAY to our family, so thanks to everyone who kept Jack at the forefront of their positive thinking that day, especially.
Back to Eagles—Jack had an Eagle on 13 at Trinity Forest on Easter Sunday. How’s that for a good luck charm?
Wonderful news!!!
So happy to hear this news! Here’s to a restful April and quick recovery from surgery!
